with the president, president obama's meeting with business leaders repairing a troubled relationship known more for conflict than partnership. when the private sector tycoons gather he'll feet as much as pressure to make it right. making aminutes with the president isn't good publicity, it might be a necessity for the bottom line. >> what obama can get and needs from the business community. it's easy to use him as a punching bag, they foolishly lined up behind the wrong guy. they can be a valuable ally in the fiscal cliff push because they're an important component of the republican party. if business leaders come out and recognizing, we've been through the experience of the debt crisis in 2011, business leaders who care about this, have a lot of money on the line, recognize house republicans are willing to go nuts and wreck the economy if you enlist them, you've put additional pressure on republicans to come to the table and agree to a deal that's more along the lines of what democrats and president obama would like to happen. i think there's -- there's something in it for president obama. >>

the busy holiday shopping season. here is a little more of what president obama had to say today. take a listen. >> if congress does nothing, every family in america will see their income taxes automatically go up on january 1st. every family. everybody here, you'll see your taxes go up on january 1st. i mean, i'm assuming that doesn't sound too good to you. that's sort of like the lump of coal you get for christmas. that's a scrooge christmas. >> reporter: timothy geithner put forth the president's sort of starting bid while he was on the hill on thursday. it includes $1.6 trillion in new taxes, $400 billion in cuts to medicare and other entitlements which will take place at a later date, and also about $50 billion in new stimulus spending. republicans are essentially calling it a nonstarter today. majority leader eric cantor said that it's not a serious proposal. as you heard, house speaker john boehner essentially said that this isn't something that we can work with. their main sticking point are the taxes number one, it's about twice what they would be willing to talk about, and al

tries new negotiation tack. not giving in. the headline in the baltimore business journal screams obama's fiscal cliff offer spurned by republicans. obama takes hard line on debt. which might be news to some people in the parenthetical. tony is a political correspondent and mark hannah is a former aide to the john kerry and barack obama presidential campaigns. some of the media tries to short form the story and comes up with a headline that can be barbed easily. this is suggested by a cable anchor who suggested the media has been arrogant since barack obama won in covering him and in covering in particular this fiscal cliff. tony, your thoughts. >> it could only be an msnbc anchor to take this long to figure out. there have been some media, the financial times which endorsed the president has called the president's bluff on this plan. they say this is the same proposal he put in front of congress that received zero votes a year ago, not even one democratic vote. but what the media has been doing is buying into this story line that president obama has some sort of mandate to do whatever
